My love for writing began during a dark period of my life as a child, during a time of uncertainty and turbulence—yet I was blessed with loving educators and elders in my life that showed me that writing could be used to not only escape into worlds beyond the physical but to create a new world in real life with the simple stroke of a pen to paper.
I dedicate this chapter of my life to Mr. Shaver, Mr. Day, Dr. Humphrey, my 9th grade English teacher who gingerly held me and told me that I must take a leap of faith when faced with potentially entering an academic space that did not desire to include me, my Grandma Nell for always encouraging me to read and explore my higher purpose and most importantly my Grandpa “Big Baby” Jay, my strongest supporter—I miss you so, so, dearly. Also, I wish UI had my work from late elementary and middle schcool but unfortunately, those works were discarded without my permission. I will say though, I was in my Feist, Olivia Lufkin and Sara Baralles bag haha…

I wrote this song in the 9th grade, when life began to feel uncertain and I was facing the adverse struggle of being one of the few Black girls rocking natural hair at school… A call for self-love, connecting to a higher purpose, and betting on oneself.

I wasn’t sure how to address my acts of compulsive self-harm that began my sophomore year of highschool. Nor how I felt like a product of my genetics as a child of someone who struggles with drug-addiction. I felt broken and desperately wanted to speak about it, and this was my first attempt at that.

Another work from my high school years, I was writing about the experience of having an epiphany. For me, this is when I truly began to consciously shape my spiritual beliefs and values. I aLways forget what grade I wrote this in, as there are days and months that I actually can’t recall unfortunately, but I do remember beginning the song between 10th and 11th grade as the first lines were inspired by a famous book and movie that was released in 2011.

Songs I Loved To Sing As A Child
These are simply a few songs, and a playlist, of songs that I absolutely loved and or sang as a child. Mind you, this list is not every single song I rocked to, but many of these songs inspired my own art, singing style, and overall vibe!
